I must live at confused.com. Well, I seem to currently, as am having headaches trying to get the UEFI Shell application onto a bootable USB memory stick. I think I need the memory stick to have a GPT (GUID Partition Table) and a System Firmware Volume format thing, or something, format it as FAT32 (or FAT/FAT16?) as well as then putting the file at /EFI/BOOOT/BOOTX64.EFI
(digs further through the 3,578 pages of specifications for a Clue)

There should be no need for a GPT or anything else exotic. Probably FAT16 rather than FAT32. UEFI built-in filesystem support is very limited despite allowances in the spec for more. Setup generally has an option to boot from UEFI or legacy first, so you may need to set that to UEFI. Is this your QEMU setup or a real board and if so whose UEFI firmware is it?

No remote console AFAIK, and certainly no sshd, unless you have a full featured Management Engine, but even then you would be limited to the screen resolution in use so it would not help. You could always write one though...
