Whilst tidying up (==throwing out) some old VHS tapes, I came across an interesting one I had recorded in LP mode
Random tapeage from 11 years ago featuring stuff from BBC2, Sky one (old analogue), Central ITV and TVS, so I got around a bit in this year (1990 I think) spending half my time up north (nr Stafford, living with the parents whilst working in Kidderminster) and the rest darn sarf (Haywards Heath in a rented house with
plankman (aka Bug) and Kaffy)
Adverts amazing how they seem so different in only this short space of time. with classics like the Alliance & Leicesters "Compact and bijou, Mostyn" from Steven Fry & Hugh Laurie. lots of car adverts. And "0898 blahblah party talk" things.
Red Dwarf 3 episodes (White Hole, Dimension Jump (Ace Rimmer, RAR!), Meltdown). Pretty good. latter series are so crap in comparison.
The Staggering Stories Of Ferdinand de Bargos. quite, quite surreal. Elk rustling. And featuring a line I still use sometimes "I rattle my antlers at you". Nice to have tracked down where I got that one from. Though I blame Nigs for the whole "MOOOSE" and hands as antlers on the head thing.
The Wombles with Wellington catching Madame Cholettes pancakes from the Common with a rod made from a branch and some string dangled through a tree stump that is the chimney to the kitchen below.
SledgeHammer. "Hammeroids". spoof judge dredd episode. almost funny. Hey,
srfc (Neil). This was one of your favourites! (not that Neil posts to his LJ, nor probably reads anything on it.)
Bedrock. Or should that be BadRock? :) A Little Angels gig (hello
aeia :)
News at Ten. Most strange to see a report from Yugoslavia reporting of civil unrest and a warning from the FO that Britons should be careful whilst on holiday in the Dalmations. And seeing a picture of the Yugoslavian government at the time (8 republics represented with Serbia and Croatia as the main protagonists) all sitting round an annular table, and I am sure that I can see the back of Milosevics head. Quite unnerving to see this, know I saw this then, and to know now some of the horrors that the country was imminently going to be subjected to.
And a short article on another cyclone to hit Bangladesh only some weeks after the previous one had killed 125,000 people (which figure may rise to 500,000 people the Bangladeshi spokesperson said)
With the advent of PVRs, and NLE techniques possibly moving into the mainstream, I wonder if in x years times we'll have access to such varied unordered but interesting snapshots into history. We're already in trouble for having culture in a form which may not last (paper verses bits) to be analysed by the future historians...

There will always be people who print *everything* out. I work with several who print all their emails and keep them in lever arch files. Sad, but true.
