officially giving up on DAT, am cleaning out the old tapes & throwing them away, and then to find a home for the DDS4 tape drive I paid a grand for a bit ago...

Wonder what to do next for backup - get a decent backup program & use the external firewire HDDs? Very tempting...

Nothing ever lasts.

All I can see to do these days is endless copies between whatever's mainstream yesterday, and what's mainstream today (plus a careful bit-for-bit diff post-copy).

I have some Onstream ADRs that I don't use any more.

Go for DLT, and buy cheap tapes on Ebay!

How about some form of writeable DVD for backup (the selection of an appropriate format from the mess available is left as an exercise for the reader)? With careful control of the size of /home I manage at home using CD-RWs for normal backups, with an occasional burn onto CD-R before I do any major changes to the system (new OS version, etc.).
