I need to install MS Visual Studio 6 (enterprise), but the Setup for it refuses to go any further till I let it "update MS Virtual Machine for Java". I don't trust it - it's 4 years old product that wants to furkle with MS Java. dilema time!

hmmmn. I have this to look forward to (scarily) as I u'upgraded' by main development machine to WinXPpro but still haven't reinstalled VS6(ent) back onto it yet.

The biggest trouble with MS software is MS themselves ... any (every!) other manufacturer doesn't mess with system files without asking whereas MS installation routines seem to always be happy to overwrite existing files without questioning the version or date or anything at all, thus I now always install MS software before doing anything else (like service packs) but with a new OS that isn't possible.

Keep us updated on progress / solution!

Windows Update (kicked via the SUS server here) downloaded the latest VM, [critical update 816093] being the patch for a security flaw in the VM, so it should be fine again now. Touch wood...

Because in between then and now MS furkled with Java, got told to stop furkling with it, stopped supplying it, all kinds of dim witted things.

the 'scarey' bit is for the few web sites that I have to use IE for potentially getting more broken (one gets the feel for when something is using MS centric stuff, as the site just doesn't *do* what it should) and in case the install left it in a state where the MS updater decided it couldn't / wouldn't / shouldn't update the Java VM back to where it was before the dimwitted MS VS6 decided to downgrade the Java VM as it though it knew best. Did see some MS knowledgebase articles on Java VM updates / not doing them any more / something or other...

Well, yeah, but you can (with a bit of hunting) doqnload the JVM separately. Just grab the latest, install away, then bung it back on.

How bizzare... I did exactly the same thing yesterday - installed VB6 Enterprise. I asked a Very Experienced Developer if I should let my JVM be updated, and she said "Yes".

Now all I have to do is stop my laptop BSODing with NMI errors :(

Trouble with stuff updating the MSJVM is that MS no longer support it. I tried downloading the JVM from the website specified by IE6 help, and got a message saying that thanks to a court case with Sun, they're dropping support, and you have to go use the Sun one or the IBM one or the various other JVMs that actually comply with Sun's standard. If it weren't VB demanding it, I'd go for the IBM one as it's quicker than Sun's and just as free - but I suspect VB will look for specifically the MS one in the registry. Does it have a copy of the MSJVM on the install disk or is it trying to download it?

sorry, can't quite remember the resolution but I think it appeared that either the critical update mentioned restored the VM back to the latest, or the visual studioi install didn't actually change it...
