Well, the electronics in the key probably cost rather less than £1 (simple RFID tag I guess, the same sort of thing that various companies were looking into sewing into clothes since they're cheap enough to give away). But then again, a 20x markup on electronics is about what you expect for car related stuff.

£25?

£*25* ?

when [livejournal.com profile] perlmonger [ahem] mislaid his Discovery key, it cost one hundred and twenty sodding quid to replace, as the alarm system has to be tweaked.

so think youself lucky.

Never lose the red master key to a Fiat, as it's cost you hundreds to replace. But then the best thing to do with any Fiat is to push it into a quarry anyhow.

I've always found that I never lose car keys - mainly because I haven't got a car...

I've just thought - would it be a good idea if maybe your car was opened by the same key that opend your house/flat? Benefits - one key does all. No huge bundle of keys, and goodbye to fumbling to find which one is the car key.
Drawbacks - one loss/breakage buggers up everything / one theft leaves everything open to burglary.

Okay, maybe not such a great idea...

What if cars opened to your fingerprints? Like KITT! That would be cool! And then you could get that guy who played the cardiac surgeon in "St Elsewhere" to do the car's voice.

If everyone used buses instead of cars, they wouldn't lose their keys in the first place, because there would be no keys to lose...

I'll shut up now...

Serves you right for getting a car that's less than ten years old. ;) I bought two spare keys for my "new" car for, err, so little I've forgotten how much.

Remember when they used to talk about silicon chips geting so cheap they'd be giving them away with your cornflakes?
